Grant Hanley has shaken off fitness concerns to be named in Steve Clarke's provisional Scotland squad for Euro 2024 - alongside Norwich City duo Kenny McLean and Angus Gunn.

Hanley was forced to withdraw from the last international squad in March owing to fitness issues as he experienced a lack of sharpness after returning from a lengthy lay off from a ruptured Achilles back in March 2023 that left him sidelined for eight months.

The defender made just eight appearances in a campaign frustrated by injury, with an eight-minute cameo against Birmingham on the final day his only appearance since March.

Hanley will now need to prove to Clarke that he is fit enough to make the cut for the tournament in Germany starting next month. The club captain is highly regarded by Clarke and could be handed the chance to impress in friendlies against Gibraltar and Finland.

The individual schedule that Hanley undertook has had the desired effect, with the defender admitting in April that getting to the Euros was his primary objective.

"It's something that came from me," he said back in April. "It was me that made the decision at the end of the day, and it was fully backed by the medical and coaching staff.

"I'm not a young kid, I've been in the game long enough to make decisions for myself and it wasn't a decision that came easy.

"I knew it was time sensitive in terms of the end of the season. I'm desperate to be involved in the play-offs and I'm doing my best to be involved in the Euros with Scotland."

Clarke has named a 28-man provisional squad for the tournament. Scotland open the competition on June 14 against hosts Germany.

Gunn, who has been a consistent performer for City throughout the season, is one of four goalkeepers to be included but has been a regular staple of Clarke's squad since switching his allegiance last season.

McLean also features amongst the midfielders that include Scott McTominay, John McGinn and former City loanee Billy Gilmour.
