Alfie Hewett was 'thrilled' to have continued making his mark on the senior wheelchair tennis tour with his ITF 3 series tournament victory in Preston last week.

The 15-year-old overturned top seed Marc McCaroll 6-3, 6-4 in the final to complete a terrific week that also saw him progress through the rounds without the loss of a set.

McCarroll, who turned 28 during the event, is ranked 24th in the world and was part of the British Paralympic team in London 2012. The Norfolk youngster was too strong for his more senior opponent and even held off a fight-back from McCaroll in the second set.

'It's absolutely awesome, I can't quite believe it,' said the Cantley star. 'I knew I'd taken Marc to three sets at the Nottingham Indoor towards the end of 2012, so I hoped it would be close again, but I never thought I would win. All credit to Marc, he came back to level the second set at 4-4, but I'm thrilled that I held on to win.'

Hewett, the junior world number one, opened with a 6-0 6-0 victory over Steve Metcalfe before beating Dutchman Pim Palmen 6-3 6-3 and 55-year-old Russian third seed Leonid Shevchik 6-3 6-2.

After beating McCarroll in the final the pair teamed up to add doubles glory by beating Shevchik and Dermott Bailey.

• Norfolk's top junior players will compete at the AEGON 18U County Cup this weekend with the girls looking to take advantage of a home draw.

Playing Division 3B at Easton College, the Norfolk girls will take on the North of Scotland, Cheshire and Staffordshire from Friday to Sunday. The boys' team face a long journey to Cardiff for Division 5B to play Durham & Cleveland, Gloucestershire and Hereford & Worcestershire.
