For 50 years a time capsule has remained buried under a city centre landmark.

But with work under way to demolish the former Marsh building and develop hundreds of homes at the site there are hopes the pod will be uncovered.

There is just one problem – no one can remember where the capsule was buried.

Marsh moved into Victoria House shortly after it was built in the 1970s and commissioned a local firm to build the time capsule.

Margaret Schofield, who lives in Rackheath, said her husband Roy created the canister for the items to go into the capsule which was then buried outside the building in the 1970s.

Mrs Schofield says after reading about the proposed plans to build homes at the site, she and Roy - who died on November 2 - wondered if the trinkets in the capsule would ever be found.

The 86-year-old said: "My husband worked for Howletts which was on the Rackheath Industrial Estate in the early 1970s.

"They were commissioned by Marsh to create the time capsule and Roy, being a sheet metal worker at the time, was given the job to make it for them.

"Unfortunately we never found out what was in the capsule but he was proud to have made it.

"When we saw the news about the plans for the area there we were talking about whether workers will find something.

"It would be nice if they found it, especially because of how old it is and to see what was put in it."

A spokesman for Zive Capital, the firm behind the development, confirmed that the time capsule has not yet been found.

If it remains undiscovered the items placed inside might remain buried under homes for centuries to come.
