The inquest has opened into the death of a student who died at the UEA Sportspark. 

Norfolk Coroner's Court heard that second-year medical student Mohammed Farraj died from "traumatic head injuries".

Mohammed was born on June 25, 2003, in Stoke on Trent, and was living at the UEA at the time of his death.

Despite the efforts of the paramedics, the student was pronounced dead at the scene. 

Area Coroner Samantha Goward confirmed that Mohammed was identified by Noordin Jamal, a "friend of two years".

Mohammed was a second-year medical student who was from the Kurdish community. He was an active participant in the Army Reserves and sports clubs at the UEA.

A spokesman for the UEA Sportspark said: "We are continuing to support the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) with their enquiries, and the university has decided to keep the related item of equipment out of public use until further notice, while the HSE investigation remains ongoing."

The HSE, which looks into breaches of health and safety laws, has also confirmed it is still investigating the death.

One student at the UEA said it is believed Mohammed was using the Smith machine - an assisted weight machine with the barbell fixed in place - at the time of his death.

Two people using the gym are believed to have given him CPR until the ambulance crews arrived and took over.

There is no suggestion of any wrongdoing on the part of staff at the Sportspark.
