Major travel disruption is expected in the city centre due to three weeks of roadworks.

The works in Thorpe Road and the Lower Clarence Road junction in Norwich, will take place from Monday, July 15, following the footway improvements currently under way in Lower Clarence Road.

The aim of the project is to reduce misuse and allow the existing bus gate to be monitored by Automatic Number Plate Recognition cameras.

The works will include the installation of a new traffic island in Thorpe Road and a new west-bound bus stop near the Thorpe Road and Cotman Road junction.

Pavement widening and the permanent removal of left turn access from Lower Clarence Road into the Thorpe Road Bus Gate will also be carried out.

Further works include the resurfacing, signing and lining of the road.

To carry out the work safely, traffic management will be in place, Lower Clarence Road will remain closed until Friday, August 9, as part of the existing works.

Temporary two-way traffic lights in Thorpe Road will be installed from Monday, July 15 to July 26, between the existing zebra crossing and Royal Mail building.

An overnight road closure in both directions will be in place from Monday, August 5 to Friday, August 9, from 7pm to 5am, between its junction with Riverside Road and Lower Clarence Road.

Traffic will be diverted via Riverside Road, Koblenz Avenue, Carrow Road, Thorpe Road and vice-versa.

The city-bound bus and cycle lane will be suspended from Wednesday, August 7 to Friday, August 9 in Thorpe Road, between its junction with Carrow Road and Clarence Road.

Buses and cyclists will be diverted via Carrow Road, Clarence Road and back on to Thorpe Road.

However, the East-bound Lane will remain open for traffic.

Pedestrian access past the works will be maintained throughout.

The work will cost approximately £40,125 and be carried out by Norfolk County Council’s Community and Environmental Services Department and their contractors.
