Hygiene problems at Pizza Go Go in Wensum Street in Norwich

The Norwich branch of Pizza Go Go, in Wensum Street, has been handed a one-star food hygiene rating following the discovery of "rodent droppings" and "gnaw marks on packaging" in its cellar.

Inspectors from Norwich City Council attended the premises - which is known for being busy during peak nightlife hours - on February 7. 

The report detailed violations including poor pest control and sanitation. 

It said: "Although no damage was found to food or food containers any indication of rodent presence on the premises must be taken very seriously. I understand that you are arranging a visit from a local pest control contractor.

"Your staff are [also] unaware of how to protect your premises from the threat of pests.

"Cleaning and sanitation are poor and have allowed debris and dirt and damage caused by pests to remain in place."

Risks of cross-contamination were also found and evidence of poor practice - including the use of cardboard to absorb grease from pizza baking trays - were listed in the report.

Pizza Go Go has 10 stores nationwide, with a spokesman confirming the findings of the report were "deeply disappointing" and had not met the company's "rigorous standards'.

He said: "We acknowledge that we fell short on this occasion.

"Following the recent inspection, an area manager visited on Monday, March 11 and has developed an action plan to address all identified issues promptly.

"In light of our commitment to maintaining high standards, we have decided to temporarily halt trading at the Norwich branch until we are confident that all necessary rectifications have been made.

"We take incidents of this nature very seriously and are fully focused on restoring confidence in our operations.

"The store has booked a re-inspection and we are confident that all the concerns that have been identified will be resolved in time for that inspection, and we look forward to restoring a five-star rating."
