Almost 50 houses being built in a Norfolk town will be the first time a development by a company owned by County Hall will consist of entirely affordable homes.

The Saxon Heath scheme in Attleborough is made up of 48 homes - all of which will be available for shared ownership or social rent.

It is the first such a project by Repton Property Developments - a housing development company owned by Norfolk County Council - which will be all-affordable homes.

Affordable housing is a term used to describe homes provided at below-market prices to households which cannot afford to buy or rent a home meeting their needs on the open market.

Once the homes, which are being built by Lovell, are finished, Orbit Homes will take over the management of the site.

Andrew Proctor, chairman of the board at Repton and leader of Norfolk County Council, said: "This development takes a new approach as it is Repton’s first development of all-affordable homes.

"It’s important to ensure that Norfolk’s housing needs are not only met, but met with the type of homes people need.

"Repton’s work with our partners goes to show what can be achieved by the council."

Mr Proctor said the county deal, which would see powers devolved to County Hall, a directly-elected leader and a £600m investment fund, would mean the authority could spend more on brownfield development.

The Saxon Heath scheme recently arrived at the topping out stage - where the development reached its highest stage.

Mark Walker, head of development at Orbit Homes, said: "This much-needed affordable development of 29 social rent and 19 shared ownership properties, demonstrates our ongoing commitment to deliver high-quality affordable homes in the east.

"And it provides an excellent opportunity to work with our strategic partners, Homes England."
