A 59-year-old man died after he was kicked in the face by a man angry that he was smoking drugs in the stairwell of a block of flats, a murder trial has heard.

Nigel Mazs was with friends in the communal area of Malakoff Close, Great Yarmouth, when he was confronted by Martin Montgomery, 31.

Norwich Crown Court has heard that Mazs suffered a catastrophic brain injury after his head struck the floor and he died almost two weeks later.

The court heard that he had been in one of the properties while Mr Mazs and his friends were outside taking drugs.

He kicked Mr Mazs in the face as he bent down to pick something up.

Will Carter, prosecuting, said Mr Mazs "fell back" and "hit the back of his head very hard indeed on the concrete floor".

Mr Carter said Mr Mazs was taken to hospital after later being found with serious injuries in Regent Road, Yarmouth, following the attack on December 22 last year.

Montgomery, of Russell Road, Yarmouth, denies murder.

But the defendant, who is represented by John Morgans, has previously admitted manslaughter.

In opening the prosecution case to the nine men and five women on the jury panel Mr Carter said Mr Mazs suffered two black eyes and bruising to the nose as well as displaced fractures in his nose.

He said: "It's very difficult to see how a kick causing that degree of damage could be delivered without an intention to cause really serious harm to the victim."

Mr Carter said if that was right then Montgomery was guilty of murder.

The trial continues.
