Padel court plans for East Anglia Tennis and Squash Club

The East Anglia Tennis and Squash Club in Lime Tree Road could sacrifice part of its car park to construct two high-tech padel courts.

The fitness craze is a combination of tennis and squash and is one of the fastest-growing racket sports in the world.

If planning permission is granted by Norwich City Council, the club members would be able to try the sport, which emerged from Mexico in the 1960s and is usually a doubles game.

Under the current plans, the club will lose four parking spaces, but will still have more than 30 on offer to drivers using the facilities.

The "latest generation" of specialist artificial grass will be used on the courts - which are around half the size of those used for tennis - and will be blue, green, orange or purple in colour.

Tempered glass will ring the outside of the courts, which is used as part of the game, and LED lighting will ensure that the courts can be used all year round.

The city council is considering the application.
