River Wensum in Norwich bursts its banks amid tidal surge

People have been urged by the Environment Agency to take "extreme care" due to the potential for flooding across Norfolk.

Two swans took to the flooded park (Image: Andrew Lawn)Officers from the Environment Agency are monitoring tide locking which happens when raised sea levels stop rivers from draining out to the sea which can lead to flooding.

The tidal surge is being caused by a low-pressure system and strong winds in the North Sea.

It comes as new flood warnings were issued across the region this morning.

Warnings have been issued for the River Yare in Cantley, Brundall and Reedham and the River Waveney in St Olaves, Somerleyton, Burgh St Peter, Oulton Broad and Beccles.

Flood alerts have also been issued from Ellingham and Thorpe St Andrew to Breydon Water, the Norfolk Broads around Potter Heigham, and from Diss to Ellingham including Bungay.

The Environment Agency has warned of disruption to rail services as well as on the A47 in Reedham.

The weather forecast is expected to be clear over the weekend however some of the flood alerts are to stay in place over the Christmas period.
